Im looking to see if its feasible to take out an insurance policy on my tools. I just recently went from working in the shop to being a full time field mechanic so all my tools are on my service truck at all times. The biggest issue is that when Im on duty Im out of town on the road for 8 days so my truck sits in front of a hotel after my shift. I'll probably have to get a commercial policy since due to the amount and the fact the tools arent at my house so I cant see a rider on my home owners covering them. Any ideas?

You should be able to purchase a small commercial policy covering them, if your HO won't cover it.

Are you self employed or employed by a firm? Even though your tools are yours, I would think that the firm may carry some burden if you are traveling under the auspices of their employ. You may want to check with them.

Your company will have an insurance policy to cover the tools. Speak with HR and ask them how much they cover and if you need to provide a list with serial numbers. I have field techs and the company will cover theft provided the tools were properly. All of my techs have to provide a list twice a year andpictures if there are no serial number. As long as the tool boxes are secured we cover theft.

If the boxes were not locked the insurance says tough luck.
