I was wondering if that was just the online deer also? But, I also know that where I hunt I see more bucks than does. The state still wants more does killed. Hell, if I killed two or three a year I don't think I would have any......I did take one this year for a family that was really needing the help but that is the first doe I've killed in years........

Curious.....do you feel the ODWC allows the "overharvest" of deer? Are we taking too many does?

I don't feel this way, but it appears some do or may? Trying to get a feel of how this board leans regarding this matter.

I feel it's a regional thing. Sasakwa see's very few does, 45 miles away, we are covered up in does.
How does the ODW manage that? I don't have an answer. They would have to micro manage the entire state, and they don't have the money to make that happen.

Hiding from all you crazy people!!!
We have an estimated population of 475k deer
We kill roughly 100k a year, so under 25%.
So at the end of the year we have 375k deer and say in a pefect world 50:50 buck:doe that leaves 185k doe left to replenish the herd. Now say only 50% of them have babies, that's 94k. But say 50% have twins so add another 46k babies.
So at the end of the year we killed 100k deer and repopulated with 140k. Our population grew right? Now take a 25% mortality rate in fawns and that still puts us at close to even. But we all know our ratio isn't 50:50 and we have more doe, so those numbers can probably a little or possibly a lot higher. But we also arnt the only ones doing the killing, cars, predators, poaching efc...
But our population has held strong or grown every year for a long time.
To answer the ? No I don't think we over harvest as far as the state as a whole. The regional deal I can agree with for sure, I'd bet in some places we probably over harvest some.

I do wonder at times if we are over harvesting. Allout's #'s are great and fairly accurate...but it only takes in account deer actually checked in. I hear talk all the time about ""so and so killed a doe and didn't check it in because they process the meat themselves". Sometimes these are land owners and don't feel the need or the responsibility of checking them in or just unethical hunters in general. I understand they should check them in and the right thing to do would be to turn everyone of them in...but it isn't always realistic. I'm sure everyone on here knows someone who is guilty of it. I would guess than an additional 15k-20k are killed and not accounted for (illegal as well as road kills). I do understand the OWDC's limitations so a lot of the responsibility lies with us hunters to manage our own land and to pass it on to the next generation.

I personally wish they would go to a one buck per season limit and have the gun season in December after the breeding takes place. Just my two cents...and i know it is covered in another thread here.
