Three freaking days now spent trying to repair a computer for one of my sisters and recover all her stuff. I could have built her a new one faster and easier. I love all my sisters but at least one of them should not attempt to use anything more technology advanced then a pencil. :grumble: :grumble:

OK rant over, back to work. :hithead: :hithead: :hithead:

I usually never try and repair(unless there is software installed that cant be easily reinstalled). I always recover the data and then wipe. I also hate telling people I am in IT, 75% of the time I get a question or request about a personal computer(theirs or a friend of theirs).

Yep, but everybody in a specialized field probably gets these types of questions in casual conversation. Mechanics, electricians, plumbers, doctors, etc. I've heard the saying that auto mechanics drive some of the least reliable and maintained cars on the road. Whether or not it's true, I don't know, but I know I'm guilty. Several years ago when I was doing desktop support, I had computer issues of my own and it took me 2 years to fix the problem. My attitude was, "I spend 8 hours a day fixing broken hardware and software and the last thing I want to do when I get home is to do it some more". Like I said, 2 years to fix the problem and you want to know what it was? The power supply in my tower failed. 1 thumb screw to remove the side panel from my tower and 2 screws to hold the power supply in place.

I'm so glad I got out of desktop support, though computer illiterate friends and family don't see the difference. If you're in IT, you know it all, apparently. One of the biggest social annoyances is my family calling me up and getting right into their computer problems. No "hey, I'm having a problem with my computer and wanted to know if you had time to help me?"

Funny thing is, I am self taught and they still bring them to me.

This one has been fun (not) something wiped out the boot sector of one HD and seems to have completely wiped her backup drive.
