Been in a huge wreck where I was ran over 2 times and dragged 192 foot under a bus. I didnt have a helmet on that day. Was only going 2 miles to get gas. I wore it 90% time before the wreck and 99% now. I ride almost everyday and got 20,000 miles in a year since my wreck. I wear armored jacket and knuckle gloves and a full face helmet and boots. I have seen people ride in shorts and flip flops and no shirt and wear a helmet. Never understood that.

I'll admit that in HS, I used to do this once in a while - stupid and senseless, of course. No excuse for it, and I'm lucky to be here now, typing out this response. I haven't ridden in many years, but I wouldn't do that again these days, what with more and more people thinking it's OK to use a cell phone (hands-on or hands-off) while driving. The things those drivers do makes my skin crawl and leaves me thankful for the modicum of protection my car affords me.

Would a half helmet have made a difference in your night last?

Mmmm...a good question. While it's really impossible to say about last night's incidents (yes, two separate incidents, two separate fatalities), the thing to remember is, most half-helmets are really cosmetic only. They do not meet the specs for testing by the DOT and obviously provide no facial protection at all.

Obviously I would say any kind of head covering is better than nothing. Hell, a doo-rag will help protect against some light abrasions, as will a ballcap. A plastic brainpain-style half-helmet is probably slightly better than wearing a Tupperware bowl on your head, and a metal one is better than that. But it's all a matter of degrees.

I agree that people should have choices... but we do legislate seatbelt use, and it has saved probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lives over the years. We legislate carseats for kids. I remember riding in the car standing up in the front seat.

I don't know the answer when it comes to legalities... all I can push for is education. Some people use the excuse that if you die, you die, and it is your choice. But there are many many additional costs (often) borne by the taxpayer in the case of unnecessary head injuries from such things. To be fair, the same can be said of drug abuse and overdoses, refusal to accept responsibility for other physical and mental health issues and abuse of our bodies through things like cigarettes, alcohol and McDonald's.

Please, just wear your helmets. :(

And be safe out there.

For the record, I am not part of your "we." I had nothing to do with any of that nanny state BS, and I do not consent.

It seems like over the past few years, every time I get my bike out I'm in a near miss caused by either a texting driver, someone just not paying attention or cops pacing me with their front bumper a foot away from my rear tire. I've pretty much decided that even with a helmet and gear it's just not worth the risk anymore. Tulsa does not seem to be a bike-friendly city anymore.
