A little tip for you guys putting attorneys names in your wallet. A name or card in your wallet does NOT a business contract or relationship make. If you are serious about having an attorney "on speed dial", do your research, sign a contract and pay your retainer. Otherwise, be prepared to take the bus, not ride in the limo.

It may not be financially feasible to have a lawyer on retainer for any such incidents, but it can help to know who to call to get the process started. Otherwise you'd be at a loss and calling a friend or relative to do the legwork while you're sitting in the pokey.

Having an attorney's name to spit out to the po-po and friends and family is NOT "starting the process". Having an attorney on retainer so he/she will know who you are when you call and will actually speak to your family/friend/the police and not let a secretary do the talking is "starting the process" ... Sorry ... You know the saying ... Money talks, ******** walks ... And no where is that more evident than in our criminal justice system.

OK, so let's say you don't have a lawyer on retainer, and the police bust you for something that ultimately turns out to be based on poor intel. They have you in the cruiser, and are about to transport you to the jail (after reading you your Miranda rights). What do you do or who do you call? No friends or relatives with an "inside track" though, so don't be bringing GC into this :P

You call a bailbondsman and ask him if he will take a second mortgage on your house ... (Yes, you will spend some time in jail ... no getting around that ...) And then you will just have to take the PD they give you ... **no good**

Seriously, having a good working relationship with an attorney these days is comparable to having a good working relationship with a doctor. If you don't have that relationship in place before you need it, you will find it difficult (and costly) to get one in place when you do ...

1. Do NOT argue with the nice policeman or woman. You will NOT win. EVER.
I've heard this put two ways. The first was something a friend told me years ago: The two closest things to God on this earth are a judge in his courtroom and a cop on the side of the road.

The second was in one of the Longmire books when Walt quotes one of his academy instructors, saying "we can argue as long as you want, then I win."
