After the excruciating 17-day wait for confirmation that the Boeing 777 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, searchers are racing to locate the so-called black boxes before a battery-powered ping they emit fades away.

I'm not understanding this logic. I thought the black boxes were turned off, how are they going to get any "ping"?

AFAIK, the flight data recorders (black boxes) can't be turned off. It was the ACARS digital datalink that was reported as having been shut down, and that would have no effect on the FDRs' pinging. From what I gather, the pinging is a literal acoustic ping emitted by the FDRs to aid in locating submerged black boxes.

It was the transponders that got turned off, not the black boxes. The black boxes will ping for thirteen more days.

And what they are saying now is that another device activated (ACARS, the one that shows the plane's location) when the 777 hit the water. This is new news.

But the sea is still pretty rough out there right now.

Here is the big question. WTF is the "black box" a capture device for data?

Why can't it transmit to the cloud like I can with my Iphone and store data?

These jackholes that are in the aircraft industry need to get up with modern technology.

I think that this is a given. It's actually been in the works but why it's taking so long after 9/11 is beyond me. Probably FAA/JAA red tape.

Essentially for the same reason you can't use your iPhone in flight.

They've located the main mass of wreckage. Hundreds of floating objects in close proximity to one another, some quiet large.

uala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- New satellite images provided by a French defense firm show 122 objects floating in the southern Indian Ocean, not far from other satellite sightings that could be related to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the Malaysian transport minister said Wednesday.

They've found this stuff by satellite floating on the ocean - eh - how many days ago? And we can't find it on the ocean surface? What does that say about our or any "search and rescue" capabilities? If no one can track a non-stealth airplane, why in hell do we need a fleet of stealth planes for!

Just sayin'. Actually, it tells me they are having a tough time constructing a diversionary "crash scene" to cover what actually happened to that 777.

Nothin' else makes sense, so why not consider a cover-up?
