I've seen plenty of black birds in the last few days and none have died near my house, although I certainly wouldn't complain if they did.

The birds dying in the story were grackles. They are migratory birds. Of course, either of these could die in large numbers and it wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings.
I hate grackles. They steal my dogs food. I crumble up alka seltzer into bite size pieces for them sometimes. Birds can't burp.

MANY years ago my dad ran a gopher plow a little too shallow. He was putting out poisoned maize to kill the gophers. Free loading birds who thought they were living in a fantasy land where the whole world owed them a living... those freeloaders picked out some of that maize that wasn't buried deep enough. Dozens of birds got what they deserved and were flopping all over the place. What did they expect?
I hate them for this reason too. I got one of those dog food feeders with a magnetic door because those nasty rats with wings were eating three times the amount of food my dog was. Now that the food supply is inaccessible rarely see them. Dog feeder has paid for itself many times over now. His food never gets rained on now either which is nice.
Any of those big wind mills by there? Those things kill a ton of birds.
Maybe it was those evil black guns killing evil black birds?
