It's a lack of will, not a lack of ability...so, no, it's not "cute" and it doesn't invalidate my position.

It does invalidate your position because it's a solution both you and I know is unattainable. The ability to make this a reality will never come to fruition because the will to fix the problem will never be there. I still love ya tho.

Was he the one that raped and murdered an infant or used a sawed off shotgun at point blank range against the young lady and watched her be buried alive?

With regards to setting him free, I won't entirely defend that position. But I would argue that were not in a position to play Gods moral authority and decide without fault who may die at our hand. The only places more capital than us our the Arabic and African nations and they hardly have high moral authority or a control of crime rates.

So is the desired outcome of the death penalty "attainable"? Seriously. Is it working as a deterrent? Is it accomplishing our goals as a society? (I used to be a hard corp proponent of the practice, but I'm no longer convinced)

I don't get how a rational small government proponent can rail against government involvement in so many things yet turn around and say that the government is competent enough to be given the ultimate power. If someone wants to explain it, I'm really all ears.
