"Low cost" means different things to different folks.

If you go with a tent (or even a single Motel-6 room w/two double beds) and beanie-weenies or bologna sandwiches from a cooler, you can take a very inexpensive vacation... :D

That sounds like a vacation I would be taking alone. I know a woman and kids who would say no way Jose. Myself, sounds like fun and I would do it cause Im cheap and easy to please.

Depends... sure, you can "rough it" like that, and I've done it many times. But honestly, these days, when I vacation, I want to relax and kind of feel luxurious in some ways. Dining out at nice restaurants - not fancy, nice, like local seafood and such - staying in comfy spacious hotels, etc., is part of it.

Of course, I know I'm going to pay for that, but it is what it is. I work long enough and hard enough as it is, feeling like run-over dogsh|t even on days off, I think I'm going to splurge. But I certainly understand the need to get away even when you have a tight budget.

This! Wife and I went to Brown's Cabins and Canoes near Yellville, AR and floated the Buffalo River. It was absolutely awesome. The water was crystal clear (you could see the trout swimming alongside and under the canoe). Cabins come completely outfitted; charcoal grills and pic-a-nic tables out side each one. They have a fridge so you can go to the local store and buy beer/food/supplies and feed yourselves. Or eat the fish you catch. Couple decent restaurants nearby, The Front Porch was one; it's claim to fame was it was on the cover of Southern Living magazine. Anyway; they have you drop your vehicle off at a spot downriver, then they take you and the family in a big pick-up with the canoe on a trailer, way up river and you float down to your car. You can do a 4-hour or 8-hour float. Of course, actual time is up to you; we pulled over to the banks to fish and stuff along the way so it actually took us more like 10-11 hours as I best recall. Then you just get in your car and go back to your cabin, and tell 'em the canoe is at the drop off point. Great family time and not too expensive at all. In fact, I think we'll do it again this summer.

Do you have a link for Brown's? I'm not coming up with anything.

I would head to Pensacola and go to the Aviation museum. We went a few years ago and it was awesome. You might even get lucky and see the blue angels practicing. It's a solid 12hr drive though.

Did this about a year ago. We flew down, rented a minivan for around town and drove it back. Stopped in New Orleans for a very quick lunch (would've liked to stay longer, but..). Stopped in Plano, TX to stay with family one night and came back to T-town. Pensacola is cool. We were there a week and I'm a big history nerd, so I wanted to go to the aviation museum and the old Civil War forts on the bay. The kids wanted to kill me. I can spend a LOT of time at a good museum.
