My wife's coworker has a cabin in the area I'm looking at booking for next summer. I was looking for any personal input on the area outside of what the interwebs has to say.

We are already looking at making the drive over to Durango one day and back east to the Great Sand Dunes Monument so 2 of the days are looking booked already. Still looking to fill 3 more days with activities the boys will eat up.

I recommend going to Silverton and Ouray. It's beautiful but Red Mountain Pass is not for the faint of heart.

^^^^This is a good one.

Should you take the train to Silverton, take the train up, sit on the right hand side. Take the earlieat train you can and the bus back down, that you don't waste an entire day on the train if you don't want to.

Lake Valicito area is good too. The dunes......there's way better things to see in CO imo. Creede area is good also.

Just went to Durango in March; train ride is good - and as mentioned, on the ride up, sit on the right (great canyon/river views). We also did some tubing at one of the ski areas, but that's out now. We are headed back in a few weeks, but will likely hit the Salida or another area for some rafting, etc.

One thing that drives me crazy about roads like that. I'm the one driving. So I don't have the luxury to enjoy the view. Fearing the unintended decent down the hillside. I can see the impression of my wife's hand on my right arm and the door handle. It was bad enough taking Hwy 24 North out of Leadville a few years back. dropping down into Minturn she just about climbed out of the truck.

I've already decided if we do the train ride it will be train one way buss the other.
