The President has little-to-no impact on setting local LEO policy. Moreover, the equipment won't suddenly fail to function when the Administration changes.

My point, generally, is that a little headwork can obviate the need for equipment designed to carry out an assault in a war zone...but I suppose headwork isn't nearly so much fun as playing Tactical Timmy.
tossing an insult does not answer the question, you ask for a reason I gave a reason. Your normal lawyer self, is now trying to play a game.

In a life-or-death situation, it would be acceptable to use anything as a defensive weapon. Does that mean that the cops should also be carrying hand grenades and flamethrowers? After all, it would be okay to use them to protect their own lives.

Feel better now?

If things are so bad that you need bayonets for riot control, it's time to call up the National Guard; day-to-day LEOs don't need the hardware to take Fallujah. And, as we've seen, once they have the cool toys, they tend to use them whether they're truly necessary or not.

Again with your lawyer game, the only part that matters is there is a situation where military equipment could be used. Your own words disprove your entire liberal argument.

Mapping the Spread of the Military’s Surplus Gear

State and local police departments obtain some of their military-style equipment through a free Defense Department programcreated in the early 1990s. While the portion of their gear that comes from the program is relatively small (most of it is paid for by the departments or through federal grants), detailed data from the Pentagon illustrates how ubiquitous such equipment has become. Highlighted counties have received guns, grenade launchers, vehicles, night vision or body armor through the program since 2006.

FILTER BY

Aircraft
Planes and helicopters

Armored Vehicles
Including cars and trucks

Body Armor
Including vests and helmets

Grenade Launchers
Usually used for smoke grenades and tear gas

Night Vision
Including sights, binoculars
and accessories

Assault Rifles
5.56-mm and 7.62-mm rifles

This is the equipment being bought according to the NYT, I have no problem with that!!! You want to riot and try and hurt our men and women in blue................. Piss on you, grow up and learn how to express your self without causing others bodily harm!!

Have we forgotten Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elan Gonzales? Granted, those were Federal LEOs using military tactics and weapons against citizens but exactly the same thing can happen with local law enforcement if they have the equipment.

I remember support for the assault weapons ban by some law enforcement, I don't want those people to be any more militarized than they already are, do you?? How about law enforcement confiscating guns in New Orleans after Katrina.....do you really want those kinds of LEOs to be more militarized??

I'm with Dave on this one......
