Guess they took a shoot in the dark.....
2 of themThey used a LIVE cartridge ??!!!!
I don't even know what to say.
This. Not really, the thin wall of the .22 lr shell is not enough to contain the blast, it needs a breech to reinforce the shell walls and direct the bullet down the barrel. In this case the bullet and back end of the shell were held in place so the force of the blast went to the weakest point, which was the side walls of the shell.
This.
Years ago, a gun guy was on a local news program, and put a live cartridge (.45 or 9mm maybe? don't remember) on a hot plate under a cardboard box.
They chatted a bit while it heated up. When it went off, the case split, and it made more of a "phut" sound, sort of like a dud firecracker, and nothing penetrated the box.
His point was to demonstrate that stored ammunition doesn't present a significant danger to firefighters.
However, if it's chambered in a firearm (in a fire), that's a different story.

You know, there's probably someone out there thinking they'd pay extra for that...If you really want a oh $#&@ moment, try being inside a smoke filled room fighting a fire and hearing the sounds of the rounds going off and feeling things hitting your body. You have no idea what it is or which direction it came from.
