Hanging is very effective, but it's pretty much an imperfect art. A skinny guy needs more drop distance than a 3-400 lb fat guy... and even if you give the fat guy just enough momentun to snap his neck, his head may come off anyway.

I don't understand the big deal about execution drugs. Any local veterinarian can put down large animals, and (alledgedly) in a humane manner.

Anything that puts down a 12-1400 lb horse should certainly take out a human.

The medical way works fine. Every argument people have against it is ridiculous. Patent line and plenty of meds = done job. And there are a number of different meds that will do the trick. The only issue with the meds if I remember was the manufacturer not selling it to the state for that purpose. That should be an easy enough thing to work around tho.

Let's stay old school and not stray from our roots, HANG'EM.. A good nylon rope should last hundreds if not thousands of hangings.. Then cremate'em and use the ash on flower gardens so that they finally add some beauty to the world.. If it turns out to be killer flower nutrients we can market it as " let this be a lesson to you fertilizer..

What kind of self-respecting rancher pays someone else to put down a horse? That can't be a real thing.
Depends on the rancher and the horse. ;)

My dad had an old cow pony put down at around 32 yrs old. He'd bought him as a two year-old, and all of us kids grew up with him (I rode him in the TQHA "Grand Entry" when I was 8). He was as gentle and smart as you could possibly want.

The old horse finally got down and couldn't get up (we'd helped him up a few times). Woulda been kinda like shootin' a family member.

More Perfect (from Radio Lab) did their first episode about the death penalty, called Cruel and Unusual. One of the interesting takeaways for me was the history of lethal injection and how it came about. It's got oklahoma ties and was pretty much scribbled out on the back of a napkin and has become this big legal issue (both for the idea of cruel and unusual punishment and, as was mentioned, the legal fight for states to obtain the drugs.

IIRC, one of the ones used isn't really made in the US and the European makers stipulate they wont sell the drug for lethal injection purposes.
