I did an Armslist trade that didn't quite go as planned. Had a shotty for sale that wasn't moving so I opened it to trades and a guy hit me with a Charter Arms Pitbull in 44SPL+ ammo and some cash. I've been apparently on a wheel gun kick and didn't have anything with "44" in the name so I said what the heck.

At the meet up it seemed in good (but desperately needing a cleaning) condition, and a quick check seemed like it was in order. Until I got home and started playing, and the hammer was not staying cocked in single action. Did a full disassembly and cleaning, and it seems like the little shelf where the hammer catches the trigger to stop at SA is either worn or filed, because you can feel it "catch" but then it just immediately releases.

/sigh/

I've done a whole lot of deals on Armslist and had so far only had one real bad experience. This isn't the worst out there but definitely disappoints me. I'll call Charter tomorrow and see what my options are.... supposedly they have a lifetime warranty on most of their modern stuff, and if not the trigger/hammer are only like 50 bucks plus shipping.

I traded in my favor on this deal so it won't break the bank if I have to pay out but dang.

It sucks to get a faulty firearm.
I see too many times where someone says they have one that won't shoot or won't do something, with the following comment, "off it goes to armslist or gunbroker".
Your junk doesn't work so pawn it off to someone else? I don't work that way and it makes me disturbed to see others do that.

Honestly I've had some negatives here too. Overall in probably 100 plus Armslist deals having two bad isn't terrible but 100 percent positive would be ideal really. I may not be perfect but I've never put something out that wasn't performing as expected even if karma isn't real.

I mean I'd just get all of GeD's stuff but he's too far away!!

Well, hopped on the phone this morning with Charter Arms, and let me just say I've got 2/2 in great support experiences. Donna who answered seemed to be as friendly and knowledgeable as they come I found out this particular piece was probably made in about 1983, so it's a bit older than I would have guessed. Unfortunately that means it's older than the lifetime warranty so I will wind up spending on parts.

We kicked some options around and I wound up settling on getting a replacement hand for the trigger, a replacement regular hammer and a replacement DAO hammer. I figure the hand might need to get replaced anyways due to age, the hammer assembly (included the pawl and such) might fix the issue, but for the minor cost, if I had a DAO only hammer then I can put it on there and it'll match what it's doing anyways. They confirmed there was no technical issue doing that conversion. So for $80 in parts I should be good to go. Definitely well within my trade margin on the deal I suppose.

These are not the firearms you're looking for.

For myself, I consider things like this to be an 'entertainment expense'. Good luck with the 'upgrade'!

It's a good way to look at it, and I do the same. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on a lot of firearm types, but wheelies have never really been my thing. So this week I stripped apart a 15-2, tore this one way down, and watched who knows how many hours worth of smithing info. It's all part of a learning process, and learning is entertainment IMHO. 80 in parts and coming out with more knowledge than I started with ain't going to kill me at all.

Charter Arms has come and gone and most likely didn't institute the lifetime warranty until a certain iteration of the company. Even some established companies (I think Smith for instance) only applies the lifetime on ones manufactured after a certain date.
