They were probably trying to save it because they wanted to eat it. Phillipino co-worker decades ago had a photo series of his neighbors slaughtering a dog much like that one for dinner while he was home on leave.
That reminds me of a story my mom tells.
Her parents would raise a calf or two for slaughter in he future. She said there was a calf that would follow her around like a dog, my grandparent’s warned her it wasn’t a pet, don’t get attached to it.
Well she did and they slaughtered it. She was so mad at them she claimed she didn’t eat beef until she was sure her pet was eaten and gone

We raised meat rabbits, for 4H and freezer.
Daughter wouldn't eat "her" rabbits. Told they weren't hers. I sold hers and bought some from Carl.
All was good.
We lived behind Northland shopping center growing up until the 3rd grade.
We won a live turkey there and had it in our garage.
About a month latter we took it in to be butchered for Thanksgiving, well that cost us because mom just couldn’t let them kill “Tom”, we had to trade it in for another turkey

My dad immediately predicted we would end up keeping it for a pet.
He repeated that prediction several times
When we had it butchered, without telling them, we had my family over and grilled steaks. After dinner, we told them where the steaks came from..
Dad said, "I really didn't think you would do it."
