Hanging is very effective, but it's pretty much an imperfect art. A skinny guy needs more drop distance than a 3-400 lb fat guy... and even if you give the fat guy just enough momentun to snap his neck, his head may come off anyway.
Not to mention the large quantity of street drugs that are just sitting in an evidence locker waiting to be destroyed. I don't understand the big deal about execution drugs. Any local veterinarian can put down large animals, and (alledgedly) in a humane manner.
Anything that puts down a 12-1400 lb horse should certainly take out a human.
