That was a few years before i could drive and paid attention to them.

Well, in all honesty, that image with the '61 tag was in the later years of the numbers. I can recall early '50's vehicles with the numbers for the counties. The two letters came later, if I remember right.

So yeah, I'm probably much older than you.

Mayes County was 35-XXXX until the 1960 census, when it changed to 28-XXXX, and then later, ME-XXXX, MY-XXXX etc.
Rogers County was 36-XXXX until the 1960 census, when it changed to 29-XXXX, and then later, RG-XXXX, RE-XXXX etc.
Tulsa County was 2-XXXXX until it changed to Z-XXXXX.
Oklahoma County was 1-XXXXX until it changed to X-XXXXX or Y-XXXXX.
Muskogee County was 3-XXXXX until it changed to MG-XXXX etc.
I don't remember any others.
It seemed like the big politicians got the low numbers. My brother was born in 1929, so he always reserved 36-1929 or 29-1929. His phone number was RO3-1929.

Junior Samples phone number.
Yep, his used car lot. :D

Junior always kicked the bumper of an old car as he walked past it. My favorite episode was the one where they removed the bolts without telling him, and when he kicked the bumper, it fell off the car.

He literally froze and stared at it for several seconds, then said, "Well... that never happened before."

I have a '58 Fairlane. Tags are 1958 Cotton County issue. Tag is CT - XX
I don't know when they changed or remember ever seeing numbers instead of letters. I "think" there is 1955 tag hanging in the garage, it has CT, also.

I did find these "historical" tags at the following website. (Scroll down to "Plate History.")
