So I was shooting 95 grain FM, which is what it is supposed to shoot, and having a great time, when the safety catch/safety drum just broke right in two. While I was shooting. Yep. The left hand side, the actual safety lever itself and about half the drum, just fell out, and the other half is stuck inside the slide, held firmly in place by spring tension. I can't relieve the spring in order to be able to pull the busted piece out! I guess I'm going to have to try to get the extractor out by pulling/twisting the hook in order to take pressure off that spring, which does double duty to hold the extractor and the safety drum in either FIRE or SAFE. I'll order a new safety catch/drum in the morning and try to figure this out without screwing up my pistol's pristine finish. Dang.

I don't have any background with the Walthers, but that's odd that it broke. A friend called yesterday and said he shot one at our range really liking it and wondering what I thought of them. I didn't offer an opinion.

Well I didn't post pics in the first post, but here you go. The piece that broke is a hefty, solid part...it MUST have been defective to begin with in order to just snap like this.

I have had at least one since 1995. They are a blowback operated pistol, and in .380, they are a handful, believe it or not, And they will bite if you get too high up on that backstrap...having said that, mine are very accurate, fun to shoot, and well...they are just cool guns. There are much better carry options today, but there is no way a Glock 43 or a Shield, or any plastic gun can compare to a Walther PP series pistol for the...well, here, you can see what I mean...

It was probably defective from the beginning, I would assume that it's a MIM part so it might have had a small defect.
Have you figured out how to get it out yet?

Yes; it is a MIM Part obviously, and my guess is it was cast poorly from the get-go. I am going to clamp the slide in a padded vise, and after covering the area with protective material so as not to scratch the finish, I'll use a jeweler's screwdriver to push in on the extractor plunger towards the rear of the slide as I push in on the hook of the extractor, hoping to be able to relieve enough tension to let The extractor fall free. That takes tension off the safety drum plunger and after I get it loose, it should come out like a broken tooth.
