My father used to work for Phillips 66 back in the 70s, when most of their turnpike stations were joined up with Howard Johnson restaurants.
There was a local man who always came in for dinner several nights a week. Dad said he was very shrewd and bitter at the entire world, and he was known to always pack a pistol in his waistband.
One night after dinner, he went to the restroom. After just a few seconds, a gunshot was heard. Come to find out later he had dropped it and it discharged.
Dad said when the shot rang out, obviously other patrons there were screaming and yelling, as most folks would, except for one gentleman, who was also a regular and apparently knew this guy well. While sitting at the bar reading his newspaper, dad said he never flinched, never looked up from his paper, and simply said...
"Well, I hope the sonovab!tch shot himself."
