I just killed one in my backyard. My yard backs up to a flood plain, so prime snake habitat. Even so, that's the first venomous snake we've seen here in the year and a half we've lived here. It was about 18"-24" long. It's not in one piece so it would be hard to measure it now! And the head was still chomping away whenever prodded before I launched it out of the yard.

We live on a rocky ridge, and for years I've posted copperhead pics on this forum. 8 total if I remember right.
A few years ago, our 20'X20' strawberry patch died from a blight of some sort that wiped out everybody's strawberry's in the area.
Not a single copperhead since then. I got to thinking.....I almost stepped on one at that patch, we had two dogs get bitten near that patch, and killed a couple pretty close to it.
Maybe just a coincidence? I'm sure they don't eat the berries, but the thick cover did provide a great place for them to hunt insects.

If it had been way off in the wild, I would have take a picture (from a safe distance) and left it alone. But in our backyard, no. We have a pool and host family get togethers way too much to leave copperheads running around the backyard.

Nope. Copperhead is one I won't tolerate. I killed several of them when we had the place over at Keystone. Don't need them around with a bunch of folks running around in shorts/swim suits, and flip flops ... especially kids. The little ones look too much like earthworms, and I had to educate some children over there to "LEAVE THEM ALONE!"
