I was a food stamp kid growing up. It was embarassing to go to the store and use food stamps or to be a free lunch kid.

Ditto that. But we did it. Until we didn't have to. Then we didn't anymore. Thank God I had a mother who worked hard to teach me that it was a safety net, not a hammock.

I was lucky and never needed it.
We were raised on a farm and grew most of what we ate.
Dad was a career military guy and mom always worked.
We had a big family by the standards of when I was a kid.
Don't feel like I missed out on anything.
I remember some of our neighbors would bring us government commodities.
I think it was their way of paying back for all the garden veggies we gave away.

We were taught to never look down our nose at less fortunate.
Some of my friends I grew up with were dirt poor, I didn't care.
For the most part most of them didn't take assistance unless they had to.

But as you said it has become a hammock for some folks and that just isn't right.
