Just wondering if I have to use Honda brand oil in a Gx160 motor for warranty reasons?
I never did. Amsoil synthetic from right after breakin.
i would say yes. at least until the warranty is over. there may be a list of approved by honda oils also.
The Magnuson Moss Warranty Act was enacted to prohibit requiring branded oils and filters as a condition of warranty coverage, so I'm gonna say no. The manufacturer can set specifications for the oil, but they can't require that you use their oil.
Honda doesn't refine oil, nor bottle it. I worked for awhile in the Compounding and canning plant at the Conoco refinery. We bottled several different brands every day.
The Honda warranty should specify the oil's requirements they need to keep the warranty into effect. Match or surpass that and your good to go.
