Another point mentioned that is worth repeating, the President usually has very little to do with the economy. It is mostly congress unless the prez is doing something to hold down the economy like Obama is with his energy policy. Even then it usually takes 2 years after congress passes bills or the prez's policies are put into place to have any real effect.

Damn Rick, we need to stop agreeing with each other. That may be a sign of the apocalypse.

OK
He was a badass. Too bad about his Progressivism.

Too bad he didn't get more of his flavor of Progressivism accomplished.

Yep.

Welcome to "The Jungle"? Ol' Upton was a commie too.

Even a bad clock is right twice a day.

Yup.

Gah, WTJ, are you still trolling on TR's progressivism, or do you actually believe what you're saying? Yes, Sinclair was a socialist and The Jungle was intended to win people over to his side. It failed, and as he famously put it, "hit America in the stomach and not in the heart". TR was reluctant to look into it because of Sinclair's motives. America rejected Sinclair's socialism, but for some strange reason were disturbed that their food plants were disgusting. Funny stuff.

Yep, the government should have let industry run wild in the era of disgusting food practices, child labor and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. smgdh

OK, this one's for all me critics:

1. I didn't name the Nazi's. They named themselves Socialists. Go back and read where I mentioned the common thread of communism, socialism, fascism, progressivism, and American liberalism. Yeah, I did add the last two.

2. If you don't like the way sausage is made, don't eat the sausage. Once you let ANY government start policing anything, the power grab begins. Where do you stop? Price controls, confiscation, camps, euthanasia for the "Common Good" ?

3. Since you all seem upset with my viewpoint, what and how much power and force should any government be able to exercise? For me, it is simple: Does the Constitution allow the Federal structure the authoritah? If you want to argue that sanitary food practices are an interstate commerce issue, I could see that as soon as it crosses a state line. Again, the market should rule, and in the case of Mr. Sinclair's book, did create a steep drop in demand for processed meats. See the pink slime issue going on now. BTW, pink slime is USDA approved. How's that working out?

4. Intrastate, the fire codes, food sanitation, and labor laws are the responsibility of the individual states. Should we nuke or invade Bangladesh because they pay kids 22 cents an hour to work in sweatshops? Where does government do-gooding cease to be doing good?

5. Lots of folks on here get wound up about unions and the legal system. Are these issues not the supposed reason for their existence?

6. I pay about as much attention to "Conservative" talk-show hosts as I do to Liberal, Fellow Traveler College/University Professors. It's all run by the Ministry of Propaganda. I can read, and even cogitate. Helps me draw my own conclusions.

7. Finally, I am a contrarian libertarian. Yeah, I realize a lot of people don't like freedom because it is a painful thing to be self-responsible. As far as I am concerned, you can all dig up The Man of Steel, Lenin, Il Duce, Marx, Engels, the Roosevelt family, LBJ, Pol Pot, Reagan, Getty, Gould, the Rockefellers, Idi Amin Dada, or whatever flavor you like and crank up yer own personal New World Order. I simply ask to be left the hell alone to mind my own business, pay my fair share of taxes based on what I use, and I will let everyone else try to tell each other what is best. Very limited government is the cost of freedom. If y'all haven't noticed, we haven't been free in this country since the turn of the last century.

8. I used to really like TR, until I read Morris' series and did some cross-checking. Great guy to hang out with. His politics: Not so much. Just another do-gooder telling everyone what's best for them.

I think we are all intelligent enough to understand that the history proves time and time again that my dog won't hunt. The Central Collectivist Progressive Democratic People's Proletarian Republic just ain't gonna leave my kind alone. Never have, never will. And I am REALLY ok if you don't agree with me. That be your red wagon, no pun intended.

It all starts with fluoride in the water. LOL.

As the saying goes: Better dead than Red.

Interesting the regard some here have for JFK.
In his own time he was hated by those on the right as much as Obama is today.

The welcome crowd at the airport held signs saying "Welcome to Texas Commie"

This handbill circulated in Dallas the day before the assassination.

You are blind if you actually think Nazi's are Socialists.

Maybe you should read George Orwell's Homage to Catolonia or an actual history book.

Yeah, I know, it's not what yer Glenn Beck told ya.

Orwell? You mean the guy who wrote "Animal Farm" and "1984"? That guy? Get right on that as soon as I finish "Das Kapital". Glenn Beck, like Ol' Upton. is occasionally right also. However, I don't get my knowledge from the Government-Information complex. I do what they do, and make up my own shite.:lookaroun

Yes, that guy. Do you know his political affiliation?

If he was a democratic socialist, doth that make him a Nazi? Uhhhhh, no, wait, that's national socialism, and it must be a TOTALLY different thing even though it has the same name. Now, is that Newspeak or Oldspeak, I have trouble keepi...wait, wut? One is in a nation and the other is?

What is he was a commie? Hence my reference to "Das Kapital".

I understand that because I don't agree with you that you believe I am unenlightened, some kind of Luddite, or maybe stupid, or even mentally defective. I think theParty requires that you attempt to re-educate me before they come for me. As a contrarian, I revel in your concern and driving need to do good on my behalf.

Good luck and good hunting!

WTJ, National Socialists are fascists. The "socialist" is part of the name of National Socialst German Workers Party. The actual socialist elements of the Party were brushed aside when Hitler marginalized the Strasser brothers and pretty much totally eliminated by the Night of the Long Knives.

JB, I do understand that. However, from my picture window, these things are shades of the same political philosophy, which is rooted in communism. Yes, I know Addy hated communists, but he hated the origin (Marx, among others) and did a fair job of using the same tricks as Unca Joe. And remember, they were big buds at one point. You make the point about removal of the Strassers, but IMO the Night of the Long Knives was as much, or maybe more, about the need of the SS to remove Rohm and the SA competition.
