I recently had the opportunity to purchase a Stevens 311H double barrel from a fellow forum member. Originally the shotgun had 28" barrels. The wood condition and bluing were both poor. One of the barrels actually had a dent in it that protruded to inside the barrel itself. Not a problem. I wanted an 'old west' style of coach gun. The barrels were cut down to 18.5", which fortunately was right where the barrel damage was. Since the bluing was poor with minor rust, I sanded down the barrels and reblued them using Brownell's OxphoBlue. Next I stripped the wood and used Cabot Red Mahogany stain to achieve the right color, followed by about 15 coats of Tru Oil. The wood was then polished to a 'mirror' finish. It took about 2 weeks to finish, because I messed up the forearm sanding the first coats of Tru Oil. I was too aggressive and sanded down to the wood. The pictures show the before and after.

You did a fine job! I refinished a Mod 12 Win that was a junker a few years ago, its the pride of my collection now.

Most folks don't know what it takes in hours of work to get the finish you got. Have you shot it yet? That cylinder bore will have a big spread at pretty close ranges.

That's awesome and congrats! I'm doing the exact same thing to an almost identical gun. It's case colored receiver, so I went dark walnut. Ended up reshaping the foregrip to round, leveled the edges with the receiver, and took off that hump at the trigger guard. Laid on two extremely thick coats of stain, stuck it in the drier, took two full weeks to dry/cure. In the tru-oil process now. Looks black indoors, but the sunlight makes it glow with brown highlights. Took a junker, converting it fancy.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have about $240 in this shotgun including materials. I have not shot it yet, but don't expect it to pattern very well past 10 feet or so. This is more of a decorative piece than anything.

Next project in my cue is a Winchester 94 Ranger. I look forward to starting it soon.
