Ignoring the generational differences, they should be the same. Like mentioned, they are supposed to be identical. I think the finish guarantee still applies. They still pass the worlds stringent military tests easily (last I have seen anyway).
I prefer the later generations in some models, but the older generation for others. For instance, for compact Glocks for CCW, I like the models before they went with the accessory rail on the frame. This tends to dig into holsters, and is not comfortable at all to use with open bottom paddle type holsters. But, for a full size home defense or shooting sports gun, the rail is nice.
