I am with everyone else and say go with a ruger 10/22. They are great guns and if you ever get the wild hair to mod one, the aftermarket is huge for em.
stay away from savage/stevens / springfield 187 type guns
they have made so many variations that if you have a problem your screwed.
like 11 different firing pins
12 different feed throats
many styles of extractors
etc. etc.
they made that gun for like 70 years and changed internal parts designs every couple years.
most gunsmiths wont work on them because of the parts headache.
Buy a 10/22 and be done with it.
I thought that's what serial numbers are for.... You can hardly get a 10/22 for less than $200, even used unless it's beat up
I picked up my 10/22 originally with a black laminate stock and stainless steel barrel for $225. It can be a headache waiting around to find one for a decent price but if you hit up a gun show, you can typically find one for a good price.
Hell, bought mine when they were all $225 new haha, it's been about 8 years now. To me 22 and cheap means about $100, nothing can beat a marlin 60 in price or reliabilty when it comes to used 22s. I actually shot the barrel out of one, with about 35k rounds. Oh the days of $5 bricks of 22
walmart has 10/22s for $193.00 looked at them last nite.

Savage /stevens/springfield 87/187
Did not have serial numbers until 1968
Places like numrich/gunparts/eparts have 1 page of parts numbers covering all the variations. Even if you have a serial number. The odds are still very high you will get the wrong part.
