Simple is good in untrained hands or in high stress situations. I've been shooting for 30 + years and a gp 100 357, flashlight and a cell phone are on my nightstand. Waking up from a sound sleep and shooting at the range are 2 totally different things.

+1 on the crimson trace. Love those.

+1 on the Revolver deal too. There is a nice +p .38 in our classifieds somewhere that would probably make a perfect choice. Start with basic .38's for range rounds and if desired, go to the +p's for home defense.. Or IMHO, a .38 special will do the job just fine by itself. Love the 870 sound for a deterant, but there is a chance of that not being enough. One .38 round center mass and its good night BG. But hey, ya never know.

I think it has pretty well been covered.

-4" K Frame in .38 or .357
-Quick Access Pistol Safe
-Good Flashlight
-Cell Phone

I also think letting a bad guy get close enough to hear you chamber a round is a bad decision. Although, it seems to be effective on the television set.
