Looks like pine to me. You can split pine with a hatchet.

I'd like to see him do that with elm. Can't split it with an 8 pound maul after it's seasoned for 2 years, can't get it to burn if you put it in the stove at less than 800 degrees and it'll probably only burn half of it by morning anyway, and it smells like urine when you burn it. Makes great weights for tarps, though.
