Could it be used to remove gold plating?
Not very efficiently and with extremely toxic results. Maybe it would work if the gold was mechanically removed first. Mercury works best on "fines" or powder mixed in with the undesirable material as a way of removing it into an amalgam that can be further processed to extract the gold.
In the case of removing plating, I would look toward a chemical solution like hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide. plenty of instructions on the web about it. I have used this method to remove gold plating from electronic parts.

I know that years back Yaffee Metals in Muskogee bought mercury, you might give them a call. Back in the 60s my Dad brought home a jar of this from work for me and my brother to play with, it was pretty cool stuff to roll around around on a tray. Nobody told us it was very toxic.

I buy some to use in my mining operations in Alaska. PM with what kinda price you are wanting. Location as well as hazmat fees are to high to ship.
Hi, I found about 40 lbs of liquid mercury in with my grandpa's mining equipment after he passed away. Trying to sell it. Anyone interested? [email protected] my name is Ashlie
