I truly respect you and typically agree with your honest and exceptionally well-reasoned comments.

Maybe I am just too apathetic and mildly caustic to get it … So can I ask you to educate me on what “freedoms” the Patriot Act is taking from me? Not talking the theoretical “ACLU” application such as how we have taken the civil liberties away from those named Mohammad residing at the island retreat at GITMO … what has the Patriot Act taken away from me or anyone less apathetic as me? Thanks!
The Patriot Act destroys our 4th amendment rights to be secure in our possessions and private.

When the .gov Hoover's up all our web traffic, phone calls and text messages, without a warrant, our privacy is violated.

To say nothing about the FBI's facial recognition capabilities, license plate readers, etc.

Just how do you think Law Enforcement got that picture of the runaway teacher and girl from Wal-Mart cameras?

Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty or Safety"

This seems to be lost in the 21st century, but then again there is a chance I could get my head cut off so it's ok.

I guess that is the problem I have with it. I just don't care if ".gov" sucks the proverbial living crap out of my emails and/or phone calls. And it's not all due to my well developed sense of apathy either ... I am just not doing anything wrong much less illegal.

And I can't come up with a "What If" that would make me think I should care. That someone is listening to my phone calls, reading my posts or my emails? Christ ... I hope they enjoy my work. Will say that if they could "spell check" my work I would switch my opinion from not giving a **** to actually liking what they are doing.

As to how LEOs got the pictures of the runaway girl and teacher? They probably had a tip from someone who saw the alert that the teacher and girl were in that Walmart and they asked Walmart for the videos.

I realize that this is a hot-button topic for many and I sincerely don't mean to upset anyone who has a passionate opinion or belief on this. But until someone can provide a compelling reason "why" I should care ... I will likely continue not caring.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

It's not that you have nothing to hide. It's that they are not supposed to be looking without a warrant. The Constitution doesn't even give them permission to ask you if they can look.

Niemöller would be the best reason “why” to disagree with that part of the Patriot Act. They do emails today without a warrant … what will they think they can do tomorrow?

You have to take a moment and remember it's not about a person, its about The People. We brought the 2nd Amendment with us from smoothbore muskets to modern defense guns, so why should the 4th Amendment not apply to digital communications? Furthermore, national defense spy agencies shouldn't be able to use non court approved methods to enforce domestic law. Parallel construction is indefensible.

Now we're starting to see it creep into our federal elections. Can you imagine what would have happened if spy agencies got involved in the 2000 hanging chad fiasco the way they did in this election? Now imagine how much worse it could get in 4-8 years. And yet despite all their expanded powers, they still manage to fail in preventing terrorist attacks like the Boston Marathon bombing, San Bernardino, etc. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

My mistake. I wasn't sure what agency you work for.

I do appreciate your insight to a lot of topics and thank you for your service in security matters.

Oh I work for one of those agencies, but my specific assignment was ported over from a Dept. Of Transportation agency.
