I shook the airman's hand not because I think everyone should obey proper hat etiquette at 7-11, but because he chose to show a high level of respect to the women in the store by removing his hat and sunglasses. It's easy to treat people you don't know neutrally, or in your case, with disdain. It's rare to see a person show someone they don't even know a modicum of respect.
From what I've observed, people generally hold a baseline of respect for people they don't know on OSA. There are always exceptions, though.
