I've been reading the SDA Lawbook but I'm having trouble figuring out what has to be done to get a CHL. From what I gather, it's $200 a 10yr plus all of the paperwork and everything.

On top of that, I need to participate in a class, but I'm active duty military with a qual in M9. Am I correct in assuming that I still have to take the classroom portion of the CHL class?

I'm trying to weigh the option of getting my CHL in Texas (my declared residence) where it's free CHL's for the military after you pay for a $70 class. It only lasts 4 years though and you have to take the class each time you renew.

My understanding you can get the class and range time waived off, because you are military... You've in other words been there and done that. Just pay the $100=5 years or $200=10 years.
But here they are called CCW/CCL, Okie style
Done deal.

Ok, cool! Thanks guys. I guess I'll just get it in Oklahoma then. $200 for 10 years without having the hassle of paying for a class is better than $70 every 4 years to take a class.

Oklahoma SDA permit is $200 for 10 or $100 for 5 years. Class, prints and photo's are extra.

Your SDA instructor may waive the live-fire portion of your class. He'll need written proof of your current proficiency with the M9. The live fire portion of class is only 30-45 minutes. You really don't want to try to dodge the legal and other classroom portion of the OK SDA class; the information gained there may keep you out of jail and more. The statues stipulate that the class, without the live-fire, may not exceed $30.

Your TX permit can be converted to a non-resident, if "Uncle" decides to change your duty station. There is no provision for non-resident status of an OK SDA permit; it is invalid and must be returned to OSBI once you leave OK as a resident, or in your case, have your permanent orders changed to a post in another state.

Just got my CHL in Texas today! Or finished the class at least. Still waiting on the license... I did my shooting portion with a full size 1911, GI spec. I'm kind of a fan of it now. I really wanted a glock 19 before hand but I think I like the SA only of a 1911.

Do any of you all carry a Kimber CDP Pro? I like how it's only 28oz (light for a 1911), but I've never shot one before so I'm not sure how bad it kicks with the reduced weight. I'd like to get some feedback if you all would be so kind. :fullauto:

jlau,

You'll still have to take the classroom portion....but your M9 qual will save you the extra expense and time of the range. Depending on where you take it it and how big the class size is, that can be anywhere from an hour to several hours...

IIRC you also need to have an Oklahoma State issued ID, as in driver's license.

Kimber Crimson Carry Pro. Love it. I haven't fired a full size/weight 1911 to compare it to, but I don't find the recoil objectionable. I think the .45 acp is pretty tame in general. I even have an Ultra Carry (3" for those not fluent in Kimber-speak) which only weighs 25 oz. It doesn't kick bad either. I think the grip design of the 1911 is the controlling factor in taming the recoil. Both are very accurate and conceal very well (nice and thin, unlike some BRICKs I could name).

You WILL notice and appreciate the reduced weight after a day of carrying it on your hip. I'm a fan, obviously.
