For a long time now, I've wondered why Colt didn't try better to keep up with the market.

Colt has been so horribly managed for so long that it's just downright amazing that they are still in business and the union hasn't helped them any either. I guess iconic brand awareness has carried them, but absent more .gov contracts I don't see it going much farther. Sad deal all around.

Colt made far too many poor decisions in it's operational mission. They turned their backs on the general shooting public. They focused their attention to military contracts that never materialized. They missed out on the height of Cowboy Action Shooting by not keeping the Peacemaker in production. They want three prices for their 1911s and ARs ever thought there are numerous clones available that are just as good as a Colt.
