Man shot by intruder near 10th and Lewis

Published: 1/3/2011 3:17 PM

A man was seriously injured when he was shot by a gunman who burst into a residence near 10th Street and Lewis Avenue on Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened just after 1:40 p.m. in the 2500 block of East 10th Street, Officer Jason Willingham said.

Preliminary reports indicate that the intruder pulled out a gun, forced his way past a woman and went to the bedroom where her husband was sleeping.

The gunman struck the man, who was shot during the ensuing struggle, Willingham said.

The armed man demanded specific items from the home, Willingham said.

The woman left the home for a short time and then returned, Willingham said.

The man, who reportedly is 68 years old, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in serious condition, EMSA Public Information Officer Chris Stevens said.

The shooter was described as white, in his early 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 165 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded shirt and blue jeans.

Tulsa Police Pinpoint A Dangerous Crime Spree

Last Update: 1/06 6:31 pm

Police have pinpointed a dangerous crime spree, already in 2011. At least seven Tulsa families targeted, since the beginning of the year in home invasion Officers say a lot of the cases are very similar, three men armed with guns kick in front door tie up the victims and in some cases beat them.

"They beat a pregnant woman," says Tulsa Police Sgt. Dave Walker. That's just one of seven home invasions that worry Sgt. Walker. "As if a home invasion isn't bad enough now they're starting to beat up folks," says Sgt. Walker. He's concerned, if not caught, the bad guys will continue to strike. "So far for the spree of 2011 is the home invasions," says Sgt. Walker.

It's news neighbor Paul Johnson says he would have never really paid attention to, until just days ago. "I still don't believe it," says Johnson. He still can't believe the crime scene that was outside the house he's been living next to for the past nineteen years. "I came out police cars were everywhere officers told me thieves kicked in the door and they're wearing masks, they tied them up and kicked the pregnant one in the stomach several times," says Johnson. An all too familiar scene playing out in neighborhoods across the city. "For the first week that's what were focused on," says Sgt. Walker. Before there's another victim or these crimes get even worse. "Certainly we need to know whose doing it and get them off the street," says Sgt. Walker.

If you have any information in any of these cases, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers at 596-COPS.

Alleged victim detains suspected burglar

Published: 2/22/2011 10:00 AM

A victim beat and then detained a man who allegedly broke into the home and implied he had a gun, police said.

Tulsa police Officer Jason Willingham said a resident was in the kitchen about 8:45 p.m. in the 200 block of South 69th East Avenue, when a burglar allegedly tapped the man on the shoulder, implied he had a gun and then told the resident to "get on the ground."

The resident then punched the man in the face, Willingham said.

Police booked Todd Tracy Hicks, 45, on one complaint of first-degree burglary and one complaint of second-degree burglary, jail records show.

Hicks was taken to the hospital for treatment before being booked on a $50,000 bond, police report.

According to police affidavit, Hicks allegedly broke into an apartment in the 200 block of South 70th East Avenue and stole a knife before going to the second residence where he was detained.

Willingham said the first call and alleged burglary came from the home of Hicks' ex-wife.

After allegedly being tapped on the shoulder and told to get on the ground, the resident at the home "fearing for his life, resisted Hicks' assault and detained him until police arrived," according to jail records
