Ruger sfar 308 AR10 built in an AR15 platform .. common caliber, ammo is plentiful, and can easily reach out to distance if needed.

One and only for everything for $1K or less, then I would go AR-10 in 308/7.62X51 for hunting and self-defense applications. Ammo available everywhere.
