Close, with the 30-30 having the edge. I was aware that the 30-30 uses a .308 projectile. The 7.62x39 appears to use a .311 projectile.

The lead (bullet) in both the 7.62 x 39 or 51 and the 30-30 are the same. The casings (shells) are what makes the differance.

Actually the bullets are not the same either. Close but no cookie. The standard diameter for a 7.62X39 Russian is .311 not .308 which NATO and Commercial use in the 7.62X51 cartridge.
