In some S&W models (the 3 digit ones, especially in revolvers) the first digit represents the material the frame is made from.

6= stainless steel frame As in 629, 686, etc.
5= carbon steel frame
4= aluminum-magnesium alloy frame as in 442, 438, 459, etc.
3= titanium frame

It gets a trifle confusing sometimes, because S&W also still retains some two digit model numbers as well, that are stainless or aluminum alloy frames such as the Model 60, Model 67, and others.
