A great home made cosmoline, is to take common automotive grease, and mix it 50-50 with solvent, or at least until it is fairly thin. drop any metal parts into the mixture, remove and hang by a wire. The solvent will evaporate leaving a thin coat of grease in all of the hard to reach areas. Vacuume seal, and your good for a long, long time.
My grandpa did this to his plow blades every year. After he passed, one set was in the weather for many years before I put it back in use. Still corrosion free under that coating.

PVC is good, I heard that you should bury it vertically for smaller exposure from people with metal detectors, etc. I also heard that it is a good idea to put a hacksaw blade in a Ziploc and tape to the outside to help open it when you dig it up.

That's a good idea, also if you wrap the gun in diapers, they will absorb all moisture w/o hurting your gun
