E.O. 8985 by FDR created the Office of Censorship in 1941, which included censoring news reports of war casualties. Only a third of subs to be sunk were reported. Just about all of the naval warfare in the Gulf of Mexico was censored from the press. And of course, the most famous, the Manhattan Project was censored (although, I agree with keeping prying eyes away from weapons development). EO 9631 by Truman abolished the Office of Censorship in 1945.
