Recapping the article, the future of american manufacturing hinges on:

1) robotics
2) smart computers
3) 3D printers

I hate to be a killjoy, but that stuff isn't new to 'manufacturing' and has been kicked around as the stuff for redeeming a weak manufacturing base for decades.

Manufacturing is machine tools, metalworking, and critical thinking. The US loses thousands of years of manufacturing know-how when retirees give it up and plants shut down. The guys that can do this stuff go to their graves without passing it on.

People these days get liberal arts degrees rather than going to trade schools. An entire generation of coffee baristas with no real skills. That's what US manufacturers need to worry about, not China.

Very well said.

There seem to definitely be less people in trade school. Most go to college and graduate with a degree they can't use. As far as making a living and having a profession, I think a person with a trade could do as well or better than most with a degree. Having a college degree isn't the same now as it was 30 years ago.

Why would anyone do backbreaking blue collar work when you get paid the same as an assistant mgr for a fast food place. Either case you don't make enough to take care of yourself let alone a family.
