An article in FOX News explains what the noises are being heard this winter in the Midwest, the noise is made from what are called "Frost Quakes" which is movement of the ground and breaking of rocks from freezing.

I was hearing the same booms outside last summer. Large explosions or sonic booms. Never heard an aircraft afterwards though, might have been too high up. They did seem directional though, mostly west of me.
2 booms just happened. About a minute apart.
I heard one north of us it seemed about 15 minutes ago. We are in fort Gibson.
I don't understand why the recycling company is crushing anything like propane tanks. Stillwater steel buys them, cuts off the ends, welds them up for culverts.
