IF possible, instead of talking to the boss, talk to his boss. We had a 'selective' lay-off; not seniority based. Talked with Plant Mgr about what was going on and was given the canned speech, BUT, after 1/3 of the workforce was gone, the BOSS that was doing the dirty work of laying everybody off found out HIS position had been eliminated and he was the final nail in the downsizing coffin.

That's a bit of job security there. Now find other ways to weld yourself to the position, like becoming the Right Hand man for the Right Hand man....LOL.
