is how skilled and how sneaky you are. If shtf, being in the open in daylight will be suicide within a few weeks. There will just be too many armed, desperate people around. There's 300 million people in the US, with only a very few million in Alaska or Hawaii. there's 4 million square miles in the lower 48 states, and if shtf, not a damned thing will stop 20 million people frlom flooding across our borders, looking for better weather or other opportunities. So, figure 80 people per square mile. A square mile has 640 acres in it, an acre is about 10 yds by 1/4 mile, or 220 ft on the side, if square. A shotgun or centerfire rifle shot can easily be heard for a mile or more. Many people will be so desperate that any sort of human sound will draw them to you, with the intent of removing you from the competition for resources and/or take your stuff. A mile of radius from your location when you fire, means over 3 square miles of area, over 200 people will hear that shot (on average).

Regardless of how "remote" you 'think" your bol or current place is, it's a sure thing that hundreds of others know about it and can reach it, if shtf. In nam, we had 1/2 million US troops, and many 100's of thousands of Hmong/montegnard, and S viet troops, in an area the size of Indiana, guys. Because they had the intelligence and fortitude to stay hidden in those tunnels. Read THE TUNNELS OF CU CHI, about how the VC had a major tunnel complex a mere 70 miles from Saigon, almost thruou the entire war. We knew about it and didn't DARE go in there to do anything about it. We just dropped lots of 500 lbs bombs on it. Well, if shtf, there will be no air force, no bombs to worry about.

In less than a yearfter shtf , unless something restores order very quickly, 90-99% of the population will be dead. It will then be a lot safer to move around and gather up all the goodies left by the dead. All your really have to do, and the only thing that makes sense, really, is to "hole up". It's not that hard or expensive to stash 6 month's supply of food for everyone in your family. About $200 per person, of grain, legumes, deer jerky, fruit that you dehydrate yourself, and sealed cans of Crisco. The chances are not bad that 6 months will be plenty, depending upon what season shtf occurs in.

You can sprout seeds in a very few days to the point that they offer serious nutrition. Below the surface, small plots, in the middle of thickets, means that they are unlikely to be found, and sheet plastic can extend the growing season by a month at either end.
