Depends where your backflow valve is, and how well it is insulated against the cold, it is the part that is most susceptible to freezing/damage. None of the zones should have water in them if the system was installed correctly, only water would be up to the master valve.

I turn ours off when we have hard freezes, back on when it thaws. I water year around based on the amount of rain/precipitation we have had, and how dry the soil is.

A properly designed irrigation system should have gravity low-point drains. As mentioned above, if the ambient temperature is really low the system could freeze at the nozzle when running but it would have to be really cold.

If you are in an area that requires an above ground back flow preventer, you will need to winterize it but it's easy. If you have an outlet nearby, just wrap everything in heat tape and cover it in foam. If not, just shut off the main valves and open the release valves to winterize. During warm spells you can close the release valves and main valves and continue to water as desired.
