my 19.2 volt batteries are kaput.
i don't use them everyday, but I do use them a fair amount

Is there a big enough difference in Lithium and the Ni Cd batteries to justify buying lithium?

Lithium are well worth it. NiCad is dead IMHO I will never buy something that uses it again. My Ryobi with the extended batteries I picked up will work you half to death and the last time I charged the battery was nearly a year ago and It still has half a charge.

You might also consider switching your tools over to a different brand since you need batteries and possibly a charger. When my Dewalt NiCad batteries died, I transitioned over to Milwaukee Fuel(brushless) and couldn't be happier with the performance, battery life, and warranty.
