No good deed ever goes unpunished. But, you did the right thing. You obviously possess resources that make this an inconvenience as opposed to a financial disaster.

You might benefit from a second and perhaps a third opinion as to the repair costs.

As to whining, it's a no cost way of venting. Get it out, deal with it, and put it in the past. People act not the way they are taught, but in the way they have been treated. Assuming this young man is as described, he'll benefit from your kindness.

I think you are doing the right thing by your friend.

If you are planning on a repaint you should consider checking for the paint shop you want anyways and then asking them about the full job. Prolly save you a few dollars in the long run
