I would be with you guys in the smokeless propellants but smokeless powder was way before the 1900s. It was invented in 1884. Aside from the powder I agree that ammo has made it a loooooong way

The ammunition makes the gun, not vice versa. You don't make the ammo to fit a gun, you make the gun for the ammunition to work effectively out of.

I'd say it's Maxim's idea of operating a firearm's mechanism using recoil or gas.
Took us from the world of Gatling guns and revolvers to the world of proper machine guns and auto pistols. Without that, there's no Garands, no 1911s, no AKs or ARs.
E: As much as I love John M Brownizzle, he took Maxim's idea and filled in engineering details to make the gun perfect. The big idea behind all of that was Maxim's.
