does the 870 youth come with 18 1/2 inch barrel and does it have the extended mag tube?

I think the standard is a 21" bbl coming in at 6 pounds, but the 870 platform is amongst the easiest to customize...tons of screw on parts to be had. Putting on an 18" barrel and a mag extension would take you about 15 minutes.

The youth only weighs 1 pound less than the standard and LOP is only 1in shorter at 13 vs 14. With the adjustable recoil reducing stock you can go all the way down to 11 1/4 in LOP. As for the weight once the LOP is adjusted for her and she has a better hold on the shotgun she should be able to handle the weight and recoil much better.

But as for a 410 pump with a 18in barrel I would look at the mossberg 500HS 410

For my friend's wife we went with Mossberg 505 Youth from academy
20 ga
11" LOP
20" barrel
fit her 5'3 frame extremely well, as expected from a gun specifically designed to do so.

There are two drawbacks:
1) 505 and 500 parts don't interchange
2) It is too short for 6'2 man to shoot off shoulder - your nose touches the thumb.

Looks like they updated 505 to 510, that goes even shorter.

P.s. Mossberg FTW again.

Like post have said, if the LOP is too long then she has too much gun/weight extended out in front of her.

get the correct LOP and this would move the weight back closer to her body and make it easier to hold.

so a shorter barrel and a shorter stock will reduce weight a little but more importantly move weight closer to her body.

i agree with the post that said in time of self defense, i don't think a person will register recoil - hard to train for this.

remember to train her correct stance - upper body weight leaning forward, most of upper weight over the front foot, hold gun in tight. this stance will absorb weight. Most women if not taught correct stance, will lean back at the waist with upper body behind their waist which increases felt recoil.

shooting a shotgun at a stationary target = a lot of felt recoil. shooting at a moving target = less felt recoil, so train with thrown clay birds if u can.

she has a mental block about it. teaching correct stance/ how to lean in/ tight against shoulder. these things require her to try, she won't even pick it up. So that being said everything you said I don't disagree, but if she just won't practice then she will not pick it up IF she needed to. She has shot a 410 and didn't mind it at all so why not go with what she feels comfortable? and with Winchesters PDX1, those are pretty nasty

Can I ask why your sticking with a shotgun at this point?

Is she averse to a carbine of some sort? I'd go to a light, short rifle before I went with a .410.
