I just moved in to a new place and it doesn't feel like home just yet. I'm trying to get used to all the new house noises and surroundings and feel comfortable here. Well I'm laying in bed last night and wake up to a loud noise, I couldn't tell were it came from and didn't hear anything else once I was awake, but the hairs on my neck were standing up and I had a feeling that someone was in my house. I live alone so there shouldn't be any noises inside my house. I grab my HD 870 (bedside) and clear the house, I found nothing knocked over and nobody in the house, but I couldn't go back to sleep after that. I normally sleep with my bedroom door open, but before I got back in bed I closed it and locked it. It just felt safer and I wanted one last line of defense or noise to give me that extra split second in case I needed it. It also gave me a better piece of mind.

Which got me to thinking I wonder how many people close their bedroom door at night or even lock it for the same reasons. I would at least like to hear the door rattle or hear it being kicked in compared to someone standing over the top of me while I sleep or killing me in my sleep. Or getting the jump on me and leaving me defenseless while they rob me and my house. Downside is by closing your door you can't hear other noises as well throughout the house if someone was to break in through a window or door. I know I'm just paranoid right now because of last night, but I may shut and lock my bedroom door every night. Thoughts? Advice?

Those feelings are not fun. I live alone half the time since my ex and I do a week on\week off with the kids. When I'm here by myself I leave the bedroom door open at night. But one of the best things I've done in the last year or so is put in a monitored alarm. It really is a nice peace of mind.

Get a dog. My little, big eared, living breathing intruder detecting device sleeps on the bed with me. There is no way that anyone could get in the house without her alerting me. She is too little to hurt anyone, it is her job to warn me, then it is my job to decide what to do next!

Closed and locked unless it's wicked-ass cold (I heat with a woodstove, so door must be open to let heat in on a really cold night).

It's just one of those "what the heck, might as well lock it" things. I sleep the same open or shut, but watching too many episodes of Unsolved Mysteries makes me think it's not a bad idea to lock it. :D

I've never felt uncomfortable in the house I'm in now. Probably because I built it and was in it daily from the time it was framed, so it didn't seem that strange when I moved in.

We shut the door to keep the cats out (and the dogs when they come in). We lock it to keep the kids out.

It (the creeps) will go away. Just takes a while. In the mean time, don't shoot your foot. If you do accidentally shoot your foot, PLEASE post pics!!!!

I would close the door, lock it, then block it with something like a chair or a stout board under the door knob. Sounds paranoid, I know, but while they can have my stuff (if I don't hear them in the house), they cannot have my life! I would rather take the chance that I wouldn't hear them stealing my stuff, than wake up to find someone standing over me in my bed. With the door locked and blocked, I at least believe I could hear them coming before they got right up on me. And for the record, I have stared over the sights of a rifle at a man who broke into my home, and I can assure you that you do not willingly want to do that!

I leave my door opened so my pekenese with a small bladder can go out to the puppy pads at night. Where I live I am surrounded by security so I am not too worried. Oh yea, I also have my trusty 1911 and a good flashlight right next to me on the night stand and a shotgun a couple of feet away.:)
