You haven't driven until you've been on I-5 (or any major artery) going into or out of greater Los Angeles. Don't have to go out there much these days, but for several years I was out there at least 2-3 times a year. They drive like maniacs, but they actually use their signals - to merge into a 1-1/2 car length space between your car and the vehicle in front of you, all while doing 75-80 mph. I was scared out of my wits first time I drove on those freeways; but soon came to actually enjoy it in a twisted way - it's like all the drivers on those freeways know what you're doing, or about to do, and you know what they're doing. Unlike in Oklahoma, in CA you never see bluehairs with handicap parking permits swinging from the rearview driving 25 in the left lane; or teenagers texting on the phone; or somebody reading the newspaper while drifting between lanes - because if they did, they'd be killed off. I called it survival of the fittest - the herd of drivers out there thin out their own weak stock, leaving only the truly capable drivers on the freeways. Every day in Oklahoma I see at least a dozen idiots who would die within the first 3 minutes on "the 5" in LA.

in new orleans it was 80mph in the fast lane everywhere, i loved it. people who went into the fast lane doing the speed limit got honked at, lights flashed at, etc.

nowadays i just hit the cruise@55 on the slow lane, relax and listen to some badass fingerpickin'. life is easy.

This. I feel much more comfortable on the 5 than I do any highway in OKC or TUL. At least when the traffic there comes to a stop on the highway, everyone is in fact paying attention and slows down gradually and consistently from 85 down to zero. It's not people locking them up and swerving into the shoulder like I saw DAILY on 35 from Moore to OKC for the years I made that commute.

I feel that it should be stated that this episode with capt. doosh occured on the stretch of I-35 between Austin and Waco....pretty much the whole way between those two cities. I would finally pass the idget and then after I had moved back into the middle lane, he would move back into the left lane. Apparently he just liked the left lane. but by that time I would be in front of him so I cared less about what lane he was in. We would continue in that configuration until I ran up on two cars, one in the middle lane, one in the left lane who would be pacing each other at which point I would work on passing the left one while he would go flying by on the right lane. Most of the time those drivers would do something (speed up and get out of the way, slow down and move over, something)

At this point I would be behind le doosh again and the entire dance would repeat itself. unfortunately sometimes it would take 10-15 minutes of me blinking my brights at him before he finally deigned to move over. rinse, repeat ad infinitum

Don't go laying all the blame at either the feet of cars or trucks. Both have their share of stupid. I've not yet had the "pleasure" of driving anywhere in California but I do go out to Washington DC on a fairly regular basis (inlaws live there) and i have the sad misfortune of experiencing the clusterfuuken that only I-95 in DC can bring. insane drivers, tons of congestion, smarmy entitled jackasses, and an absolute sense of superiority in driving ability such that they actually do try to multitask while driving.

Like I said, I know I'm preaching to the choir here just something i needed to rant.

I know I'm old and I stay out of the way, right or center lane, but what happened to speed limits? Were they repealed?

As a matter of fact, they were...By the catch me if you can law.

I'm not going to bash in this one. I make my far share of stupid decission while driving. Some intentional, some not. :)

I think it all boils down to a drivers license being basically a rubber stamp process in the US. In other first-world nations it costs a fair amount of money and requires real driver training. In a place like Germany, if you don't practice lane discipline, you are promptly ticketed. Too many offenses and they take your license, just for not getting out of the passing lane. People here just act like it is their birthright to have a license. It is not.

The worst thing about people blocking up the left lane is that it forces you to pass to the right, which feels unnatural and dangerous to me - it is not illegal, though. I thought it was for the longest time and then I looked it up. It isn't.
